PANSTEAK CAKE-UMM'S LAST STAND

Friday Night 3 a.m.

Sometime in the latter half of the decade we shall call the 1980s.

There was almost certainly Bread in the basement kitchen to be had (and I do stress Almost) but his Munchie addled mind had brighter ideas and decided to substitute Frozen Toaster Pancakes as opposed to Slices of white Bread.

This seemed a brilliant idea at the time.

It Was Not.

For decades when odd Food creations have been brought up in conversation I would chime in with my recollection of once having Steak-Umm with Cheese on Toaster Pancakes which were wistfully followed by fond yet slightly insane Culinary memories so decades later I decided to recreate this spirited concoction.

My memories did not serve me well. Yes, it was edible but clumsy on the Palate would be too kind of an observation. Well, at least I tried (again).

Photographed clearly on a paper plate to enhance the classiness of the dish.

I am quite averse to paper plates having plenty of dishes in the house but my hand is forced to utilize the "picnic" mentality and Eat at a Barbecue in my own home for most of the time.

Expectations were so high for the Steak-Umm Pancake thingy that I began preparing a second one before Eating the first.

The Ingredients were put away and had the Pancakes proper for the second round.

IT HAPPENED ON A SUNDAY

Bacon Infused Pancakes with a side of Bacon.

Pondering with my Coffee on this Sunday afternoon I was transfixing on a Breakfast Snack when Toast with Butter came to mind so I ventured to the corner store for a Loaf of White Bread.

Arriving back I realized I could make this better, there was a pound of Bacon sitting unused in the refrigerator so now it would be Toast with Bacon.

In preparing the utensils I realized I could make this even better for I was armed with Aunt Jemima Pancake Mix. So Now it would be Pancakes with Bacon.

the white bread was placed in the refrigerator for later.

As my mind raced I realized I could make this even more better.

Bacon Infused Pancakes.

Drop pre-shredded Bacon Bits onto the wet side of the Pancake.

Of course after The Cat has had her share of pre-shredded Bacon Bits.

For a pre-dinner Snack I had a Honey Roasted Turkey Roll-Up with some leftover Bacon and a rod of Cracker Barrel Aged Reserve White Cheddar Cheese.

Dinner was courtesy of Pastosa Basil/Pesto Ravioli topped with Frank & Sal's Home Made Pesto Sauce.

And quite the Sunday it was.

NATIONAL PANCAKE DAY (U.S.) (February 9)

There is a National Food Day for just about every Food I would imagine but certain ones jump out at you depending on individualistic taste of course, in my case Bacon Day comes to mind but I have yet to celebrate.

Pancakes are one of those comfort Food's that fit the bill and I happened to have Pancakes (albeit the toaster kind) in my freezer on the day (February 9) so I ran with it.

Pancakes with Sausage - Two Aunt Jemima Toaster Pancakes Schmeared with Key Food brand Butter (more like doused in this case but that is the Jedi way) and a side of Sausage.

Broccoli Rabe & Cheese Sausage as the pantry was devoid of Breakfast Sausages but this became a complete boon on the tastebud level, it works folks.

Pancake Day continues.

The SpamCake - Unbeknownst to my Trepidatious FOODMIND (is this worth the plunge or am I wasting food and time) the SpamCake became the Rosetta Stone of these three dishes and reached a level of height unattainable previously.

In other words a Tasty little sucker.

A little over an inch was its height geometrically.

Pancake a la mode - Yes, for Dessert it was Pancakes topped with Ice Cream.

Any Ice Cream will do but on hand I had Friendly's (rich & creamy) Cookies & Cream.

On a side note just the other night I was eating the Friendly's right out of the tub with spoon in hand for the first time in decades and boy is it hard to close that container and desist.

And of course I got a bit of abuse on my Facebook post due to the overwhelming similarity between the Spiral Broccoli Rabe Sausage and another inedible item from the human condition but abuse is what I thrive on when it comes to social media in most cases.

This one is courtesy of my friend Peter R.

On another side note The SPAM Single Classic must be brought up.

This I found in the 99 cent section at my local Rite-Aid and a brilliant idea it is (as well as a cash cow for the SPAM people) since most do not need to Fry Up an entire 12 ounce can of SPAM in one sitting, a slice or two will do and its cut so neatly as well.

REELING IN THE YEARS - Philly Steak-Umm Cheesteak Pancake Sammich - Does He Dare Do It Again ?

Well,... does he dare do it again ?.

Roundabout Thirty Years ago this monstrosity was created in a 3 a.m. debauchery of Munchiness and truth be told within a haze of a light hallucinogenecc induced waft of insanity, it was good then but shall it withstand now.

The good doctor is Newly Robed and still wears a Ramones t-shirt (thanks to Mr. Pasta and Jennie).

One Cooking hint is only one Slice of Pasteurized Processed Cheese Product seems to be enough
(in forethought) as this is a dense product (comments forthcoming) The Cheese that is. Let the Cheese sit for a few minutes to achieve room temperature before letting the Heated Chopped, Shaped and Thinly Sliced 100 % All Beef Sandwich Steaks to aggrandize the melting process inherent to the Curd

The Philly Steak-Umm Cheeseteak Sammich in all its Glory.

One Slice is enough.

LETS GO BANANAS - BISQUICK PANCAKES

Maybe not to my liking, I followed all the rules and did not really need them but I blame the Bisquick which is indeed a Great product but they did not come out like Pancakes normally do, No fault of them or I, it just was NOT Pancakes.

These may appear slightly overdone but I was waiting for your typical brown Pancake.

This was not happening.

YES WE HAVE NO BANANAS.

In my case I had Extra Bananas.

When in Rome Do like the Romans Do so I decided with some advice from Sarah to make Banana Walnut Pancakes.

Those Walnuts aint cheap, I could have gotten more "Blowski" for that price.

Whip It Good.

First Pancake looked promising but they all tasted the same.

A PANCAKE EXCURSION (EXODUS TO PANCAKES) 6/16/14 New Dyker Diner - Brooklyn, New York

Yesterday was Father's Day and not being one I was quite envious of all the Dad's out there having their Pancake Treat, I also have Pancakes maybe once a year when left to my own devices.

Thanks to Kristine and Ellen for letting me know I was Indeed a dad since I have a "little one" here that I care for, namely my cat.

My feline is not so adept at the griddle so I had to make a plan.

I awoke way too early so I bided my time and after a few hours made way to the local Diner to treat myself to some Warm Griddle Cakes with a side of Sausage, it was difficult not to go the Bacon route but I pondered this for a few hours prior. I have Never had Ham with my Pancakes (Ham, Bacon or Sausage are the common sides on offer) and maybe that will be the next frontier.

Going to a Diner solo is a peaceful and an introverted (in the positive sense) experience, of course it is always better with a friend but without I tend to hone in on the conversations going on around me.

Today the conversations were all in the espanol mexicano language, but I don't speak or understand Spanish, so much for honed conversations, oh well.

I placed my order and literally in 2 minutes there they were.

I must applaud New Dyker Diner on some small details here, a majority of Diners serve portion control cups of Butter and Syrup in little plastic tubs that are hermetically sealed which is fine but make for waste in the trash bin and also do not allow instant free reign of your plate which is best especially in the realm of Syrup. Here is a medium sized Cup of Butter and an actual baby Syrup container, I was so confused it took me 10 seconds to figure out how to open the darn Syrup.

Skipped the Coffee which I regret now but was served a Three Stack of Pancakes with Two healthy sized Breakfast Sausages which were halved and Grilled to perfection ($7.00).

Step one for most is to Butter and Syrup each layer, of course if this was a Seuss like tower of proportion then all bets are off but this was not. These were prepared magnificently and I have no complaints.

This is a "Realism" photo.

And She Is Done.

To the left of me the Counter, To the right of me, Injuns. Oh thats just my reflection, Phew.

Diners should be around for a Long, Long time but they are becoming scarcer.
Bless The American Diner and Good Old American Dining.

Do you know how hard it was for me NOT to order a Cheeseburger Deluxe.

ADDENDUMB - I did pass New Dyker Diner 2 days later and glanced at the Breakfast Special Menu in the window and the price did jive with my experience, it said Pancakes with Ham, Bacon or Sausage - $ 8.00 (my order was a dollar less because I skipped the coffee). Breakfast Specials used to be so cheap, then again the years have passed so quickly.

SCALLION PANCAKES

This Began with the best intentions but once you start looking up "recipes" online (in my case) as opposed to your remembrances and gut feelings the original outcome is usually not reached.

Rolling up the Scallions and Sesame Oil was unfamiliar to what I recall my mothers recipe was but it certainly sounded appetizing so I continued to follow my "fusion recipes" Logical Rule.

A sort of Fry Bread version of a Scallion Pancake but not what I was aiming for.
