FUKI SUSHI (part V) - Fall/Winter 2016

The 18th Avenue Roll was the clear frontrunner in both of our opinions.

18th Avenue Roll - Lobster Tempura, Avocado (in), Tuna, Avocado (top) with Eel Sauce.

Dragon Roll - Eel, Cucumber (in), Avocado (top) with Eel Sauce.

Nice presentation on these specialty Rolls for a Brooklyn walk-in place, huh ?

10/26/16 - Cristina's Birthday

Cristina favored Sushi for her birthday dinner but did not in particular favor a place so we kept it close to home, as a matter of fact we took the Food home take-out style. Amongst the usual fare was the Eel Roll, Philadelphia Roll, Chicken Tempura Roll, Avocado Roll along with the 18th avenue Roll and,... But Whats This ?!!!

Well, I am not so surprised as I have been eyeing this little number for some months in part due to the braggadocio of "Crispy Ball of Rice" espoused amongst its mysterious Ingredients. Well, that is mostly what it consisted of,... that is Rice but quite well and entertaining it was.

Crispy Ball of Rice.

This was topped with Spicy Crunchy Tuna with Eel Sauce and Spicy Mayo.

A very simple concoction made mostly of Rice, enjoyable but I tried it, I liked it, time to move on.

WASABI (Open 7 Days) - Brooklyn, New York.

OK so this was tried on a "whim" via Cristina and only an eight block walk from my residence.

Was this under or over Fuki Sushi which is my local place
?
Its all the same thus far.

As a matter of fact I need never return again unless Fuki shuts down.

(top row to bottom) - Philadelphia Roll, California Roll, Avocado Roll, Eel Mango Roll.

Vegetable Gyoza (Guy Zoda) - Bland to my Palate but this was Cristina's order.

Chicken Tempura Roll - A Favorite of mine.

Sushi it is not but heart and belly warming.

5/22/16 - Nothing new here, just Delicious Sushi Rolls. I have built up quite the collection of Wasabi infused Soy Sauce of my own but its going out almost as fast as its coming in.

(top row to bottom L to R) - Spicy Crunchy Salmon Roll, Shrimp Mango Roll, Oshinko Roll, Shrimp Avocado Roll.

Yaki Noodle with Beef.

Determined to try something new from the Menu Yaki Noodle sounded a bit like Chinese Lo Mein  prepared Hibachi style with Udon Noodles. At first I was not overly impressed but happy enough but you should have seen me scarfing these babies down a few hours later. Might not try these again as there are so many items yet to sample.

Outerior of this trendy yet typical place.

FUKI SUSHI (part lV) - Brooklyn, New York

4/10/16 - Gyoza - Gyoza is a Fried Pork Dumpling Japanese style,Better than a Chinese Dumpling as it has thinner skin as the frozen brand you can purchase to make at home.

4/10/16 - Mackerel Sashimi & Eel/Mango (custom made) - The Sashimi is as I expected a bit of Sardine texture, Really worth another order and I dropped a piece so that ends that . Eel/Mango Roll custom made to Cristina's order is Topped with Salty Eel sauce and containing Eel yet the Mango overpowers with a sweetness, Rice out.

4/10/16 - Mango Roll, Avocado Roll (Top L to R) - Philadelphia Roll, Yellow Tail Scallion (Bottom L to R) - The Mango Roll is a bit Sweet for my taste and I was surprised that Oshinko was absent, well at least I tried it but possibly never again, not bad but not great rice out. Raises the question if there is no Fish is it even Sushi ? Well Vegetarians need to eat something
Rice out. Avocado Roll is simply Delicious but a bit boring, however I adjusted my first taste with some - and Wasabi. Philadelphia Roll is what I have come to expect and was a bit of a sure fire thing Rice out. Yellow Tail Scallion is Fishy like Salmon including the texture and Scallions only in the aftertaste Rice out.

8/25/16 - Yummy Roll - And boy was this Yummy.

Considering myself a Sushi novice I still meander the "Roll or Hand Roll" portion of the Menu as opposed to the "Special Roll" area for those of a more experienced ilk but every now and again I take that leap and so worth it it always is, in this case WOW.

Shrimp Tempura, Avocado (in), Spicy Kani (top).

FUKI SUSHI (part lll) 4/2/14 Brooklyn, New York

4/2/14 - (L to R) - Shrimp Avocado Roll, Spicy Crunchy Tuna Roll

- Shrimp Avocado Roll - Delicious combination, they work very well together, initial Avocado Texture and Taste with Shrimpy Meatiness. ($2.75)

- Spicy Crunchy Tuna Roll - Salty at first, Fishy second, Spicy aftertaste, also Scrumptious.
(mistake here, I have had a Spicy Crunchy Tuna Roll but don't mind having it again)

Both winners, This one is a tie. ($2.75)

10/7/14 - Spicy Edamame - Well I suppose I should have had this when it was still warm as opposed to at room temperature hours later, These are Very Veggie and Quite Spicy, I did order the Spicy kind though, the jury is still out on this but quite good.

(L to R) - Asparagus Roll, Spicy Crunchy Tuna Roll AGAIN

Well, My Third time having a Spicy Crunchy Tuna Roll and it was not checked off on my MENU, Well NOW IT IS, however the Asparagus Roll is my first off of the Vegetarian Roll roster, lets see how it goes.

- Asparagus Roll - Asparagus, Rice and Seaweed out. Asparagus is nice and Crispy also there are Spices at work here, rather Hot in flavor, Very Nice and refreshing.

FUKI SUSHI (part ll) 11/19/13 Brooklyn, New York

11/19/13 - (L to R) - Bagel Roll, Ginza Roll

 - Bagel Roll - Truly a "melange", Strong enough Taste of "Deep Fry" on the Rice, nicely chewy White Fish Flavor at the end, not sure what the orange Cheesy sauce is quite yet, the rest gets lost in the mix. By no means am I complaining this is quite the Delicious Roll and you get 10 pieces as opposed to the usual 6. Upon closer inspection I see it is Seaweed (out) with a thin Layer of Tempura Batter, very interesting. The Ingredients of a Bagel roll are White Fish, Eel, Avocado, Cucumber, Cream Cheese, Spicy Mayo, Eel Sauce and Roe which is then Deep Fried. ($9.95)

- Ginza Roll - I am back already it has only been twelve days but I was oh so impressed, once we pretty much deduced it was cooked Salmon inside I was hooked, these are two very "americanized" Hand roll's but both Delicious. Neither one of these really need the soy Sauce but the Ginza Roll will benefit. ($3.00)

Another look at the Bagel Roll & Ginza Roll, Hey for $14.10 I am going to get two pics.

12/9/13 - (L to R) - Alaska Roll, Philadelphia Roll, Spicy Crunchy Shrimp Roll

- Alaska Roll - This looks a Tasty little Number and very simple too, Salmon, Avocado and Cucumber with Seaweed (in). Very Tasty at first a bit Veggie but the Salmon merriment comes out after, will do very well with the Soy Sauce/Wasabi mixture. ($2.75)

- Philadelphia Roll - Tried and true, cannot say anything else. ($2.75)

- Spicy Crunchy Shrimp Roll - I find with the "Crunchy" Roll's a bit gets lost as they "Puree" the mix or so it seems, here goes. Shrimp pieces apparent, Spicy Mayo too, also Seaweed (in). This one has a little kick, and a kick in the aftertaste, mild but kicky. Very Tasty, Hard to tell a winner between these two, Both Very Good. ($3.25)

1/2/14 - (L to R) - Yellowtail Scallion Roll, Shrimp Avocado Roll, Philadelphia Roll

- Yellowtail Scallion Roll - I Love me some Scallion so lets give this one a go. Very mild and Seaweed (out) permeates. Not Very flavorful but I am getting over a cold, Decent. ($2.75)

- Shrimp Avocado Roll - Looks promising and seaweed (in). Instant Avocado and Shrimp taste, Very Nice. both need Soy Sauce/Wasabi mix. ($2.75)

Shrimpy wins this one.

2/3/14 - (L t0 R) - Philadelphia Roll, Spicy Crunchy Tuna Roll, Salmon Avocado Roll

- Spicy Crunchy Tuna Roll - Nice Tuna Paste, Seaweed (in), Very Tasty, Spicy Aftertaste, so much so that I need a piece of Ginger for the Palate.

- Salmon Avocado Roll - A winning combo but a bit dare I say "Slimy" (well it is Avocado and Salmon), will do well with the Wasabi Soy.

Spicy Tuna clinches this, Philadelphia Roll notwithstanding.

FUKI SUSHI 7/15/13 Brooklyn, New York

I really have not had that much Sushi in my life for a man my age but I am willing to learn. After years absent from Japanese food my interest was rekindled going to Dinner with Jamie at Ginza sushi across the street from her house and now I want Sushi (or more accurately Rolls) every few months at least. This time I decided to try Eel and an actual Sushi. The place was empty but its also 91 degrees at 9 p.m. outside.

- Philadelphia Roll - A little more Cream Cheese than Ginza sushi but its just fine.

- Eel Avocado Roll - Very tasty and Avocadoey, Cannot really taste the Eel yet and had the first piece without soy Sauce so as not to disguise the Eel Sauce, Love it, will get this again. Still cannot really taste the Eel, next time I will try an Eel Sushi.

- Red Snapper Sushi - O.K. This is where the game really starts, This might be my first ever piece of Sushi as in not a Sashimi and not a Roll, All that raw Fish atop some Rice.

More bark than bite, kinda scary looking but not overly fishy. Could definitely use some Soy Sauce but once again did not want to hide any flavors. Almost a little sweet but that could be the Vinegar in the Rice.

All in all I will be back, maybe tomorrow even.

7/30/13 - (L to R) - Futomaki Roll, Spicy Crunchy Salmon Roll, Philadelphia Roll

- Futomaki Roll - I think I spy a little Egg cube in there but lets not get crazy, anyways the Wasabi will take care of that. The Futomaki Roll is more like what my mother made back in the 70s with the Seaweed on the outside and is a larger Roll, here goes.

Egg (?), Veggies, Imitation Crab (?). OK I like it but maybe prefer my Seaweed inside, will pass on this (after I finish the other 4 pieces).

- Spicy Crunchy Salmon Roll - Seaweed on inside with Salmon Paste (Looks same as the Spicy Tuna Paste) but the "Crunchy" sold me, I see it,... the "Crunch" is in there with the Paste,.... mmmm Very Tasty, You can taste the Crunch yet it is not "Crunchy", Also I prefer Salmon Paste to Tuna Paste, a keeper.

8/20/13 - (L to R) - Shrimp Tempura Roll, Boston Roll, Spicy Crunchy Kani Roll

- Shrimp Tempura Roll - This should be good as I am already a fan of the Chicken Tempura Roll, Unfortunately the Seaweed is on the outside and I am finding I am more a fan of the Seaweed (in). Also there are 5 pieces as opposed to Ginza sushi's 2 pc. Chicken Tempura Roll so i was only expecting 2. mmmm, having the first piece undipped, I see Avocado, Bean Sprouts and the world Famous Roe and finding that I do indeed like Roe, also covered in some type of Sauce. Seaweed on the outside or not this is a winner.

- Boston Roll - Crab, Bean Sprouts, Lettuce and some kind of light brown Gel, Very Tasty and I think a hint of Mayo. Very good but I prefer the Philadelphia Roll.

- Spicy Crunchy Kani Roll - Impossible to resist dipping But I Will Not for the first one. Black Sesames (?) on the outside, kind of pickly. Very Good, Kind of Fishy too, not detecting much Crunch but that might be the one piece.

Shrimp Tempura Roll wins this round.

9/30/13 - (L to R) - Pepper Tuna Roll, Eel Cucumber Roll

Well, it looks like I was so hungry that I had a Few Bites before I took the pic, oops.

I was prepared at first te get a Tuna Roll but looking at images online they seem to contain Scrambled Egg so that quashed that idea, However it looked like the Pepper Tuna Roll did not so I got that one instead.

- Pepper Tuna Roll - A Very Simple Roll, Pepper only as an aftertaste, Not Very Fishy and will Definitely benefit from some Soy Sauce and Wasabi. Seaweed (out) so not a Big Favorite.

- Eel Cucumber Roll - Very Tasty, Slightly Fishy, Finely Diced Cucumber, Eel Sauce and Seaweed (in). Probably secondary to Eel Avocado Roll.

10/20/13 - (L to R) - Chicken Tempura Roll, Yellowtail Jalapeno Roll, Eel Sushi

I am following my standard procedure and having first taste of each without soy Sauce/Wasabi and cleansing the palate with a ginger sliver between varieties.

- Chicken Tempura Roll - This should be Really good, how can it not ?. I spy chicken Tempura, Avocado and a little Roe. Very Tasty and will only be enhanced by the Soy, even the Seaweed (out) does not interfere one iota.

- Yellowtail Jalapeno Roll - I always do a little online research before ordering (and to ensure the absence of Egg) and this little number sounds quite enticing. I see Yellowtail, Jalapeno and Rice, also Seaweed (out). Crunchy JalapeƱo, HOT, Yellowtail is very mild almost tasteless but this is also Very Good, the Spiciness will go well with the Wasabi.

- Eel Sushi - going to have to get a knife to cut this in half. Covered in Eel Sauce with Sesame Seeds and banded together with Seaweed strip, promising. WOW, Eel Is Awesome, so is Eel Sauce, half a dozen please. Eel Sushi is the winner here, Delicious and does Not need Soy Sauce.

11/7/13 - (L to R) - Salmon Roll, Ginza Roll, California Roll

- Salmon Roll - This looks like it will be a rather plain Roll but there's only one way to tell. Nice Salmon Taste and Seaweed (out), Exactly what it looks like, Salmon & Rice.

- Ginza Roll - This is quite a picturesque Roll with Roe on the outside, I am in the dark on this one, Ginza being a district of Tokyo as well as the name of many Sushi Restaurants google is not helping me on this one. OK, Cucumber, Crab Meat and theres a Kick to it as well, Seaweed (in), This one is a keeper, Really Tasty. At $3.00 I would be surprised if this was Real Crab but the taste and consistency is very good.

- California Roll - One of the most popular Rolls in America and has a big hand in the popularity of Sushi in the U.S. as well. Lets see why,... Chilled Cucumber, Avocado and Imitation Crab Meat, also Seaweed (in). But if this is the Crab what is in the Ginza Roll ?

Ginza Roll wins this round.

GINZA SUSHI 8/20/12 Brooklyn, New York

Overhead view of Lunch with Jamie, Max and Bill (clockwise from 2) Bill had Salmon, Max' Tempura sampler, Jamie's Beef Negima Bento Box and my Beef Teryaki Bento Box.

Ginza Sushi is across the street from Jamie's apartment and I have been eyeing the place for years.

Eleven days after we had lunch with Bill and Max we returned, Jamie had the Chicken Teryaki Bento Box and I had a Philadelphia Roll and the most Delicious Chicken Tempura Roll, I wanted some "crunch" with my Seaweed and Rice and that's exactly what I got.

Chicken Tempura Roll and Philadelphia Roll flanked by Wasabi and Ginger.
